The filming of the movie has already been started in Palakkad. This movie will also feature Vandana, Aiswarya, Thilakan, Siddhique, Manianpillai Raju and Saikumar in the important roles. Produced by Chandrakumar under the banner of Malavika production, Simhasanam will grace the screens across Kerela by the end of this year.

After the big hit ‘Puthiya Mukham’, Deepan is trying to repeat another hit by bringing in plenty of big names for this project including Sreekanth and Thalaivasal Vijay from Tamil and Bala, Anoop Menon, Anil Murali, Indrans and Malavika in the important roles. Telugu star Yamee Gowtham is the heroine of the movie which is continuing with its shoot at Kochi and Aluva.

Ranjith’s new film ‘Mayflower’ would have Prithviraj and Fahadh Fazil in the lead roles, and would be a “simple love story” in the writer’s own words.

The film would also have five songs that would be composed by a new music director, Anand Madhusoodanan.

Last year, Ranjith’s film ‘Arjunan Sakshi’ that starred Prithviraj was released, but unfortunately could not repeat the box-office success that his first film had enjoyed.

No thrilling action sequences, candy floss romance or flexing of muscles here, even though the hero is a dreamy eyed youth with sky high dreams. Writer-director Ranjith narrates a highly realistic story of a small time real estate broker in Indian Rupee.

Jayaprakash or JP as he is known (Prithviraj), is not much educated but has big hopes about his future. He has started off as a sub agent in certain real estate transactions with some bigwigs and is slowly making his presence felt in the big bad world of realty business in Kozhikode. Hameed (Tini Tom) is his alter ego and the two tries to make some fast bucks as they help to sell the property owned by an old man named Achutha Menon (Thilakan).

Though the deal never happens, Achutha Menon becomes a part of their life and things start happening in a fantastic way for JP, soon after. He is in love with Beena (Rima Kallingal), a doctor, though her parents are not too keen about the alliance. JP manages to earn a decent fortune after some smart moves, but he learns some valuable lessons about the importance of money in life, in the process.

Ranjith once again proves why he is regarded as one of the finest filmmakers in the business, with a well written script and nice execution. Though he has adopted a conventional style to convey the plot, he has succeeded in making it look genuine. Even then some of the twists and turns in the story gives the feeling that the tactics are not so wily to the extent it has been presented.

The scenes involving Suresh Krishna and Kalpana are perhaps a bit over the top. The song sequence where some love birds keep swaying to a song with lighted candles in their hands, look out of sync as well.

S Kumar’s visuals are fine and Shahabaz Aman’s music is good in parts, though the background score could have been much better.

Things have not really been going hunky dory for Prithviraj for a while now and he is perhaps making a comeback of sorts, as JP in the film. This one is not about brawns and he has moulded himself for this rather deglamourized role with great earnestness and maturity.

But it is veteran actor Thilakan, who just steals the whole show with his brilliance. With his subtle mannerisms, dialogue delivery and amazing style, it is no surprise if his character haunts you long after the end credits start rolling.

Jagathy Sreekumar, as a wily moneybags named Pappachan, too does a splendid show. The rest of the cast that includes Rima Kallingal, Mallika, Tini Tom, Lalu Alex and Mamukkoya have done their parts very well.

Though it is a bit too melodramatic and even preachy at times, Indian Rupee is easily one of the finest films of the year. It has honesty written all over it and such efforts need to be seen and appreciated by the audience. Two big thumbs up for this one!

Set in the backdrop of a Mumbai based Marathi family, the film has Rani playing a typical Marathi girl dressed in salwars. Prithviraj will be playing a Tamil painter who speaks Hindi with a South Indian accent.

Ayya also marks the Bollywood debut of National Award winning Marathi director Sachin Kundalkar. Prithviraj said that he agreed to do this project not because he fancies doing a Hindi film, but because he found Anurag’s script interesting.

The movie will have him as Hari, a malayalee who is forced to take a job at Punjab. The most lucky actor of the times, ‘Kunchakko boban will also appear in an important role in the movie. ‘Mallu Singh’, which will be told in a Punjabi backdrop with enough dose of Bangra steps and Punjabi Gusthy will be brought to theatres by Mammootty’s Playhouse.

This Onam Prithviraj led the slot of Janapriya Nayakan – Dileep, who regularly does comedy entertainers. Dileep took a back seat while the youth icon pulled his card through the new flick Teja Bhai and Family.

With some exception like Traffic, Apoorva raagam etc every successful Malayalam film has used comedy to tell the story, whether it is Salt and Pepper or Pranchiyettan. The trend continues.

Plot

Prithviraj as Teja Bhai is an underworld don in Kuala Lumpur, who falls in love with Vedika. Vedika’s father Damodarji wanted her to marry a man from good family having high social status and no criminal record. To marry Vedika, Teja has to set up a family. Suraj who arrives as Swamy Vasya Vajas brings some duplicate relatives. The story line is fabricated to make a hit, but some twists and dialogues are unbearable. The film used all the tricks in trade. At some point it seemed like the content of second class comedy films.

Cast

Prithviraj looked fabulous. His appearance and style challenges every other young man. His comedy also has bettered.

Suraj’s numbers were well appreciated. For a film like this which can be considered a high budget, half the cost will be recouped on the tricks of Suraj Venjaranmood himself. Akhila Sasidharan who debuted in Karyasthan paired with the hero. As most commercial films, heroine didn’t have much to do. Salim Kumar, Jagathy Jagatheesh, Kochu Preman, Premkumar, Suman, Ashokan, Indrans, Thalaivasal Vijay, Bindu Panicker, Manju Pillai all enacted their parts well. A former sizzler comes for a single scene.

Direction and script

This film by Deepu Karunakaran who directed Winter and Crazy Gopalan, is glossy. His frames are picturesque and neat. The film took influence from Chitram and many other films including Basha. The script is Udaya Krishna – Sibi K Thomas stuff. References of other film had bought laughter. Some portion of this star studded film was taken as a Priyadarshan films. Many dialogues are redundant. Apart from the comedy part the film’s story and twists are too infantile. The climax seemed to be never ending and people never watched it as they know what is coming. The Malaysian part is taken well but viewers thought what the buildup was for.

Camera work of Shamdat is apt. Posters are catchy. Songs are ok; ‘Oru Madhurakinavin Lahariyil’ song seems to work well. The film had already pulled enough crowds. Anantha Vision of P K Muralidharan and Shantha Murali, who produced many successful films including Chocolate, Classmates and Robinhood.can continue their wining streak.

But a section of the trade feels that it is not a good date, as the film will not take an opening in Malabar area of the state due to ‘Noyambu’ period.

The ‘Noyambu’ ends on Ramzan day which is likely to fall on August 30 or 31.

The trade especially theatres in Malabar area which forms 40 to 45% of the box-office collections from Kerala wants the date to be shifted to August 31.

However producers Shantha Murali and distributor Murali Movies Madhavan Nair want to release it on August 26, to get the advantage of a solo release and a four day weekend.

They say Prithviraj has a better opening in Travancore and Kochi areas, but trade is clear that without Malabar he cannot rule Kerala box-office.

Meanwhile three other films have confirmed August 31, Ramzan day as release. They are Mohanlal’s Pranayam, Joshy’s  Seven and re-release of Kuttichathan in digital 3D. The other two festival releases are
releasing during Onam,  Bobban Kunchacko’s Dr Love on September 8 and Jayaram’s Ulagam Sutrum Valiban on September 9.

After a while from his award winning ‘Saira’ and not much applauded ‘Raman’, Dr Biju is back with an impressive movie about a journey which ends up as a process of self invention. Rightly adjudged the Best Feature Film in Malayalam in the recently announced 58th National Film Awards ‘Veettilekkulla Vazhy’ is another welcome addition to the topical list of films that is making malayalees proud than ever before. A commendable statement on the irrelevance of fights on the name of religion, the movie is another take on the relation between terrorism and belief, if any.

The movie follows Prithviraj, a doctor with no name working in Delhi, who is forced to embark on a journey to to keep the word that he has given to a patient on her deathbed. The later who came up injured has asked the doctor to let her son be united with his father, who has no clues about his son. As the father of the child is a notorious terrorist, she doesn’t believe the police to do her such a favour and hence she is depending on the doctor to realize her last ambition.

The doctor now takes upon himself the gruelling task of fetching the five-year-old boy (Master Govardhan) from Kerala and to knuckle down to an engaging journey to find out one of the best known terrorist, Abdul Suban Tariq. The film very easily be eligible for a road movie, starting off at Kerala to Delhi, and then to Pushkar, Ajmer, Jaisalmer and finally to Ladakh. In Rajasthan he meets Tariq’s collaborator Rasaq, with whom he engages in a heated but intellectual debate, but soon cool off for their own routes. The film appears very simple and minimalistic in approach, but subtly speaks in tons about the need of a hate-free world.

The camera-work by M J Radhakrishnan is the highlight of the entire movie that captures the soul of the travelogue like narrative with its chill and delight. The sync sound also works well in favour, with able support from the soul-stirring background scores by Pandit Ramesh Narayan.

In this predominantly male cast lines, Prithviraj once again appear restrained as a man with extraordinary act of kindness, to come up with a superior performance. Indrajith as Razaq, proves to his name of excelling in smaller roles. Govardhan, the child actor is also worth a mention for his naturalistic acting abilities. The two female roles of the film, by Lakshmipriya as the child’s mother and Dhanya Mary Varghese as his caretaker are just cameos.

Veetilekkulla Vazhi (The Road Home) with a loud and clear message is more for the discerning audience, for the thinking viewer. All-together, a well-intentioned film that should win praises for its execution and performances
